Three hours later and the cops were gone. The questions had been asked. Statements had been taken, and the information had been given over to a lead detective to investigate. Fuck, they even had the surveillance footage from around the house that showed the asshole breaking in through the balcony, masked and all. We had the promise of a return call, of someone giving us an update about what had happened.

I closed the door to my bedroom and locked it from the hallway, ensuring that if the thug came back, I’d hear him trying to break out of the room. Quickly, I set the alarm for the apartment then walked down the hall and past the guest room.

Liv stood in the doorway, and I halted, looked over at her. “Hey,” I said. “How are you feeling?”

“Calmer now. Barely.” She bit her bottom lip and released it again. “That was quite a night, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah.”

She’d already removed her pants and wore nothing but the loose T-shirt that was far too big for her. Her nipples poked at the cotton fabric, and I forced myself not to stare. She was so goddamn perfect, and the kiss we’d shared before the cops had shown up had served only to confuse me.

“You’re not going to sleep in the master bedroom?” she asked and tapped the doorjamb with a finger, looking down at it coyly.

“No, I locked it up. I didn’t want to risk that asshole coming back in while we were here tonight. The alarm is set, though. If he comes through the balcony doors, we’ll know about it.”

“Oh. OK. Good.”

Awkward quiet followed. That was what our conversations were—half sexy jokes and half silence as we tried to deal with our attraction for each other.

“Do you need anything, Liv?” I asked.

“I—uh, well, no. Not really. Just wondering where you’re going to be sleeping tonight, that’s all.”

Fuck, that was a loaded question. “On the sofa,” I said. “If you need me, just holler.”

“Oh, all right. Cool. I’ll do that. Good night.”

“Good night,” I said formally, then marched off down the hall before I changed my mind. The closer we got, the more dangerous this became for the both of us.
